“How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?” -SHODAN
System Shock is a cyberpunk-themed video game by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games, home of infamous AI villain SHODAN.
This presentation explores the universal themes related to cyberpunk, including futurism, megacorporations, artificial intelligence, the exponential growth of technology and the power that it enables. It also examines the lore of the System Shock franchise and its original characters, including SHODAN, Anatoly Korenchkin, and The Many.
This presentation is my favourite production to date. It was an absolute joy to expand on the System Shock franchise on very little material while being accurate and faithful to its lore. I’ve also grown a newfound appreciation of this game after playing Bioshock and learning more about governmental and corporate conflicts commonly discussed within libertarian circles, making the System Shock series hit closer to home.
This franchise is a cult classic for good reasons. I hope the newer System Shock releases stay true to its original form and expose a more modern generation to the System Shock experience, who might discover this presentation in time.
